Chronic Pain

Matt calls his best friend, Peter, at 3 a.m. and asks him to come over -- an emergency. When Peter arrives, Matt begs Peter to cut off his foot.

Since 1994, Writer, Producer, Co-Editor Mark Hetherington has suffered from peripheral neuropathy in his legs and feet, with crippling pain, often mis-diagnosed and without any treatment or relief by medication. The story that became “Chronic Pain” came to Mark while participating in a clinical drug trial for a first-ever treatment for this condition. Randomized to the placebo, the excruciating pain was worsening, and he had not slept in over ten days. While lying awake one night, he fantasized about cutting off his foot to end the pain. But how? He knew he couldn't do it alone, and would therefore need help. This video is the end result of that fantasy.
